Turns 70 today. Where I used to work, the organization’s President gave me the set of Hardy she had carried with her through boarding school in Switzerland. ” I learned all I know of sex from Tess of the d’Urbervilles.” For men of my generation – and I daresay quite a few women – we learned all we know of sex from Mrs. Peel.
Here is Dame Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg on an episode of “Extras” with Ricky Gervais and Daniel Radcliffe. “May I have my jonny back?…..Thank you, Dame Diana.” (Thanks to Stirred, Straight Up, with a Twist)
On September 5, 1991 James Serafini, Peter Staley, Mark Allen, Jason Childers, Garance Franke-Ruta, Derek Link and Sean Strub put a condom on Jesse Helms’ house in Arlington, VA. Rex Wockner filed this story two days later. Here’s Mark Allen remembering in 2006, and here’s Peter Staley, writing yesterday. (Thanks to WFMU’s Beware of the Blog and Towleroad for the links.)
I worked with both Staley and Strub on ACT-UP/NY’s Outreach Committee, and a year before I had called in sick to work, hopped on a bus to DC, and participated in the “Storm the NIH!” action. Human beings are capable of great and noble things: ACT-UP taught me that.
