When you get tired of reading
all the beautiful words
by lousy human beings, and come to

the end of your patience with the voluminous
indeed inexhaustible
mediocrities of goodness,

what to do? I suggest –
I don’t know.
Let him think.

And if there are no words

to this place give him back
the illiterate sleep: no need
the Haldol needle night-night;

let him go quietly; not
in horror
not in glory.

Poor Jeoffry! Poor Jeoffry! The rat has bit thy throat!

Christopher SmartAccording to Christopher Smart’s entry in Wikipedia — which notes, by the way, that it uses text from the 11th edition of the Britannica, now in the public domain — Smart had begun showing symptoms of mental illness by 1751. “Smart was wont to accost passers-by in St James’ Park and demand that they kneel down and pray with him. His public displays of devotion were consistent with the participatory aspect of his street theatre performances. Yet to an 18th century audience generally suspicious of religious enthusiasm — unless it was associated with hangings, whippings, and other forms of punishment — Smart’s public praying was considered disturbing.” From 1759 to 1763, Smart was confined to a private madhouse located in Bethnal Green, and it was there that he wrote Jubilate Agno and A Song to David. Dr. Johnson visited him there and stated, “I’d as lief pray with Kit Smart as anyone else.” William Albright used Song to David as the basis for an oratorio, and Benjamin Britten Jubilate Agno for his “Rejoice in the Lamb.” The following is the best-known section of Jubilate Agno:
